Coming Out has enormous historical importance as the first East German feature centred on homosexuality, premiering on the night the Berlin Wall fell. Heiner Carow’s drama is humane rather than sensational, and Matthias Freihof gives the conflicted central character real vulnerability. Its social observations now feel as valuable as the love story itself.
