When You Hear the Bells

Directed by Chabname Zariab

In Afghanistan, “batchas” are young male prostitutes who live under the protection of a master in a house where they are trained to dance dressed as girls for a men’s audience. Veteran dancer Saman starts worrying when he sees Bijane, the new recruit, who has been chosen to replace him. Despite his jealousy, he must initiate Bijane into the art of the Batcha dancing.
There is no safe way to watch Saman realise that a younger boy is being prepared to replace him. When You Hear the Bells turns jealousy into something far more painful once it becomes clear that both boys are trapped inside the same abusive system. Chabname Zariab’s short film is carried by remarkable young performances, and the ambiguous ending refuses to manufacture rescue where none can honestly be promised.
