There is something almost painfully recognisable in a boy wanting an object until he realises its colour might say something about him. The Pink Bike uses that tiny embarrassment to expose how early masculinity gets policed. Robert Ly’s short film is simple and direct, perhaps too direct in places, but the visual idea does the work efficiently: the problem is never the bike, only the meaning everyone has been taught to attach to pink.
