XY Anatomy of a Boy takes male adolescence apart almost like a specimen, looking at bodies, bravado, friendship and the pressure to behave correctly as a boy. Mette Carla Albrechtsen’s documentary short film is more interested in observation than diagnosis, which keeps the material from becoming a lecture. The strongest passages are the ones where performance slips and uncertainty becomes visible.
