1985 is a deeply moving gay short film about a man with AIDS trying to conceal the visible signs of his illness before returning home to his family. Yen Tan works with extraordinary restraint, allowing a simple makeup session to carry the weight of fear, stigma and approaching death. Robert Sella’s quiet performance gives the film a heartbreaking dignity far beyond its brief running time.
