Howl is an ambitious hybrid of courtroom drama, biography and animated interpretation built around Allen Ginsberg’s landmark poem. James Franco gives a committed performance, and although the structure can feel fragmented, the film captures both the literary excitement and cultural controversy surrounding the work.
